Printers in Department of Zoology and the Biodiversity Research Centre
We share a print and copy system with the Department of Botany, providing access to copiers and printers in the Biological Sciences and Biodiversity Research Centre buildings. CWL credentials are used for authentication, and print/copy jobs can be charged to specific project, grant and course worktags.
Costs
- 7 cents for each black/white printout (print or copy)
- 12 cents for each color printout (print or copy)
- Free for scan-to-email on any Ricoh copiers
Access and Authentication
Print and Copy authentication uses your CWL, and billed to a lab, course, grant, project or other worktag.
In order to print or copy, you must be authorized to bill to at least one worktag.
Requests for authorization can be sent to [zoology.support@ubc.ca], and include the CWL ID and the account to be billed.
- Faculty
- send the request directly
- Staff (Teaching and Administration)
- please ask your direct supervisor to send the request
- Graduate students
- billing to your lab: please ask your PI to send the request
- billing to a course: please ask the instructor to send the request

Install PaperCut client and printers
There is some software setup needed. To enable relatively simple setup and universal access (wired and wireless networks, Windows, Mac and Linux) we use a program called PaperCut-MF (for Windows) or PCClient (for Mac) for authentication and accounting. Setup is a matter of these steps:
1. Download PaperCut client for account access and accounting
2. Download the PaperCut Print Deploy Tool client to install the printers/copiers
Your CWL credential is needed for authentication to be able to print to the Botany Zoology Print & Copy System.
Physical access to all printers is trivial except for the 1 printer slick in BRC 125. Please email Katie Beall at katie.beall@ubc.ca to have your UBC Card tweaked to open that door.
After setting up for Mac
Enable automatic start-up PCClient at login:
- Open System Preference from the Apple menu, select Users & Groups and Login Items tab
- If PCClient is not listed, click on the "+" button
- In Applications, find PCClient and select Add
Enable double-sided printing:
- Go to System Preferences
- Select Printers & Scanners
- Select a printer on the left panel
- Click on Options & Supplies and go to the Options tab
- Check "Duplex Unit"
After following the steps above, the added printer(s) will appear in your Mac Printers & Scanner settings.
- When you send a document to the printer for the first time, the PaperCut (or PCClient) application will open a username and password prompt. Enter your CWL username and password.
- Select the time you wish to keep printing without authenticating each time.
- A second PaperCut pop up should appear ~10 seconds after you log in successfully.
- Choose the print account to bill to.
After setting up for Windows
Enable automatic start-up PaperCut on boot:
- Search "Task Manager" in Windows Search bar
- Select the Startup tab
- Find PaperCut and select Enable
You can also Disable at login, but it will require you to manually startup of PaperCut client before printing.
Known print issues for Windows users only
Automatic stapling (and sometimes double-sided printing) was found to be unavailable when installing the printers from the PaperCut Print Deploy Tool client. You must manually install the printers if you encounter these issues.
Email your poster printing request to zoology.support@ubc.ca.
We'll let you know when posters are ready for pick up in BRC Grad Lab Room125. If you don't have card access, please visit Room123 or Room121.
Poster pricing
The following prices are for 1.3m2 or less paper used. If you print a poster larger than this, you will be charged based on the equivalent multiple of 1.3m2 that can contain your poster.
Paper | Plastic | |
Fee | $15 | $22 |
Important things to note about poster printing
- To print a poster, you must be a member of the Department of Zoology, or affiliated with the Biodiversity Research Center.
- Please submit your poster to us in PDF format. Powerpoint is acceptable for poster design, but powerpoint files tend to be inconsistent from one computer to the next.
- Posters print from a 42" (106.68cm) roll of either traditional paper, or matte plastic.
- Plastic is more robust to rough handling and well suited to travel, but posters printed on this media tend to fade faster. Plastic costs $7 more per poster than paper.
- If one of your poster's dimensions is exactly 42", it will be ready to use as soon as it leaves the printer, otherwise, you will have to cut your poster after it has been printed, and paper will be wasted. We can resize one of your dimensions at print-time to save you paper and time.
Lead time
- Submit your poster at least one full business day ahead of when you need it.
- If you will be submitting multiple posters, we will need more than one full business day's notice to print them. If you plan to submit a batch of posters, whether for a class, poster session or other reasons, let us know well in advance how many posters you plan to print, and when you need them by. We will let you know how many days lead-time will be required for printing.
- Last-minute prints: If one of us is available to do the printing setup, if the printer is not broken and we are not out of any needed supplies, and if you are not part of a big crowd headed for a conference, then it can take as few as 15 minutes to print a poster. But because of all the if's, at least a day in advance works best. If you know you will need a poster printed on short notice, please talk to us well in advance, so we can schedule an appropriate last-minute print time.
