Cost is $100 per year and usually your supervisor will pay. The membership will get you:
- hands-on access to all Zoology/Biodiversity computing equipment, extra computers and software you or your lab may not want to buy just for yourselves
- disk space on the Zoology server
- full access to our UNIX/Linux servers
- the shared equipment includes 2 compute clusters (currently 40 CPU's and 120 cores)
- access to GradLab 24/7
Condition on the Use of Computing Facilities The Computing Unit is available to University users for teaching and research purposes only. Programs produced here must be made available for the Computing Unit Library on request, accompanied by adequate documentation. Under no circumstances may they be sold commercially.

Throughout the Zoology department, both wireless and wired connections are available. Wireless connections are convenient, but wired connections are 10 times as fast.
Wireless
Wireless connections are available all over campus, including outside in many places -- perhaps under your favourite tree. All wireless connectivity is managed by UBC's central IT Services. There are four wireless networks supplied by UBC accessible on campus. "ubcprivate", "ubcvisitor", "eduroam" and "ubcsecure". The latter is both more reliable and secure. Use of the wireless networks requires a Campus-Wide Login (CWL) account, which you probably already have for management of your student registration and finances. People at UBC for only a short period of time can be given Guest CWL accounts if sponsored by someone who already has a CWL account. See here for complete information.
Wired
A wired connection requires an available wall jack and a completed ethernet registration form. Please provide us with the following information to zoology.support@ubc.ca:
- port name (CCT..)
- MAC address
- desired computer hostname
- IP address
Once a computer is known to our servers, if it is set up to use DHCP ("automatic" in Windows) it will work in wall jacks all over in BioSci and Biodiversity -- there is no need to reconfigure, or to notify the ZCU of any move. If you need a cable, ask for one.
For people in the Life Sciences building, the situation is a little different. The network there is not controlled by the ZCU and does not use a DHCP server. A specific IP address must be issued for each machine, and the network settings must be entered manually.
