Collaborative research between the Amazonian Research Institute in Manaus and Canadian scientists at UBC and Wilfred Laurier has contributed to global carbon modeling through quantification of areal rates of photo-oxidation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and its relationship with sunlight in a tropical black-water system. They further discovered that partial photo-oxidation (fluorescence changes in the DOC) occurred to at least twice the depth of complete photo-oxidation to CO2 and absorbance changes.
